How to Sew a Simple Flag

and Show Your Team Spirit!

I love getting crafty!  Seriously, I get obsessive with it.  On these pages I will show off my crafts and hopefully remember to take pictures showing how I did it along the way.

Steps for sewing a simple flag and show our school spirit!

I am not the most skilled seamstress but I have a pretty good handle on all the basic sewing skills.  And I love creating pretty and unique things to give away.   In this tutorial, I have combined some basic sewing along with a little creative Cricut magic to sew a simple but really cool flag for our high school robotics team.

I am so excited.  I haven’t pulled out my sewing machine in several months as there has been too much going on to even think about getting creative.  But when I realized that our robotics team didn’t have a flag, my creative juices started flowing!  Now I have never sewn a flag, but how hard could it be?  This shouldn’t be too hard.  and Well, it is almost time for robotics season to begin again and thus I must get sewing.

Creating a Basic Rectangular Flag

Boyd’s colors are royal blue and white with just a touch of gold and black.  I found the perfect silky royal blue material and had the ladies at JoAnn’s cut the fabric to size so that I would not have to do much measuring and cutting myself.  The edges did need to be trimmed and squared up just a little and then I used a rolled hem foot on my machine to make a nice tiny hem.

Add the Fringe

Next, I added a gold fringe to three sides of the flag using a straight stitch and going over the fringe twice (once on outer the edge and once on the inside edge) to make sure it was that is would not pull off.  This is going to be GREAT!

Love the Cricut!

And finally, I used my Cricut to cut out heat transfer vinyl of the RoboBucs team logo.  I didn’t have a svg file of the logo and had to create one from scratch.  This turned out to be the hardest part of making the flag.  First, I tried to scan a picture but there was too much trash that I would have had to cut out so I quickly gave that up.  Not giving up, I began searching the internet for files of a gear, hammer and wrench.  These I pieced together to make the logo.

And next, I cut out both the school and team names.  These were much easier as the school logo is a simple Blackletter font.

I centered all of the vinyl up and ironed it on the fabric.  And voila, a team flag for my favorite RoboBucs.

I can’t wait to see you compete this year!

GO BUCS!
